It's been a good 21 years
Dear Fellow Lesbian and Gay Community Members:
It is with great sadness that I announce my resignation as publisher of the Gay People's Chronicle.
For the last 21 years, the Chronicle has been a huge part of my life. In more recent years other responsibilities have crept in and now need to be the focus of my attention. My children, my livelihood beyond the Chronicle and my aging family members now need me more than the community I fought so hard to build.
I am no longer that eager and idealistic 20-something that thought she could change the world. I am now the almost 50-something that did make a difference, however small.
In my tenure of at the Chronicle, life in our community has changed. We are more visible and more accepted. We actually enjoy some rights that would have been unthinkable 20 years ago. In 1987 our focus was to help join the lesbian and gay communities together. In those days, lesbians lived on Cleveland's east side and gay men on the west side and no one talked to each other.
Our community has grown and prospered, economically, physically and I dare say spiritually. Small things like a lavender line painted down Euclid for the Cleveland Pride parade grew into a city nondiscrimination ordinance. The small visibility we achieved on local television has grown into the national visibility of sit-coms, talk shows and cable networks. The dialogues we started

between lesbians and gay men have led to bisexual and transgender people being welcomed into our community. Publishing a paper in both Cleveland and Columbus has led to statewide organizations such as Equality Ohio.
I am proud and honored to have been a part of that process. It is my wish that this community continues to grow and believe in itself, to prosper and expand.
Remember, the most important thing that a lesbian, gay man, bisexual or transgendered person can do is to come out of their closet. That hasn't changed.
Thank you for letting me be a part of something so wonderful.
Sincerely and with great love,
Martha Pontoni Cleveland
